Aligning Art with Affirmations

This year’s Self-Love Paint ‘n Sip was more than a creative outing; it was a powerful reminder of what happens when women gather in a safe space to be open, honest, and expressive.

We opened with reflecting on a quote from All About Love by bell hooks:

“Don’t expect to receive the love from someone else you do not give yourself.”

Then we did our self-care card activity, #9 Say What’s on a Sticky Note. Each of us wrote affirmations to reflect on who we are and who we’re becoming.

We shared affirmations to celebrate our creativity, resilience when navigating life’s changes and challenges, ability to guide and be a teacher, bravery to take chances, and our gift of making others smile. Openly sharing what we wrote felt even more affirming.

We then transitioned into painting floral-themed canvases of Black women while keeping our written affirmations in mind.

As we painted, we also answered prompt questions to spark meaningful conversation, including:

  • When do you feel the most beautiful?

  • Which one of your affirmations nurtures your self-love the most?

  • When do you feel the most loved by others?

This led to uplifting and honest conversations centered on many forms of self-love. We discussed setting boundaries with family and friends to protect our mental peace, creating space for others to pour into us, balancing motherhood, marriage, caregiving — and the importance of not losing ourselves in the process, feeling at peace when we love ourselves, being brave enough to pursue our passions, and more.

Thank you to everyone who attended and filled the space with so much beautiful energy. It was all about showing up for ourselves, relating, and openly celebrating ourselves with pride.

And a special thank you to Anita of PJ’s Coffee in Camp Springs, MD, for continuing to open her space for meaningful community gatherings.

To more art, honesty, community, and self-love — together. 🎨🩷💐
