Gratitude, Grounding, and Sisterhood: Black Girl Self Care Day Recap

This year’s Black Girl Self Care Day was filled with beautiful, healing energy as we released, rejoiced, and related—reminding one another that none of us are walking our journeys alone.

We opened with a gratitude circle to introduce ourselves and share one thing we were thankful for this year. Many of us reflected on being thankful for good health, the support of friends and family through challenging times, waking up to see a new day, and the power of community.

With our hearts opened, we shifted into movement with a chair yoga session led by Tianna Christine to help us warm our bodies, stretch, and release built-up tension. Chair yoga mirrors many of the familiar standing yoga poses, but in a seated position—perfect for anyone with limited mobility or for those who want gentle movement they can easily do at work or at home.

With our bodies feeling more relaxed, we transitioned into a soothing tea meditation led by Keisha of RootedBleafs. We sipped her custom “Ease” blend to support the nervous system and ease tension and anxiety. Keisha guided us through breath work and sensory awareness, inviting us to slow down and notice how the warmth, aroma, and flavor of the tea roots us deeper into the present moment.

Afterward, we embraced calming vibrations of a sound bath meditation centered on gratitude led by Chrystal (@theeyogameditationwhisper). Sound bowls are known to emit soothing, restorative frequencies.

Before her session began, we each received an Intention Word, which included “Calm,” “Newness,” “Explore,” “Worthy,” and “Creativity” to also hold onto as we listened to the sound bowls.

We then journaled on feelings that surfaced during the sound bath and how our Intention Words resonated. This led to discussions on dedicating more time for calming practices, the importance of resting to inspire creativity, and balancing motherhood with personal care.

It was then time to wind down with a final yoga stretch and close with an uplifting flower circle. Each woman received a flower paired with a reflective prompt and accompanying mantra. Prompts like “I am most proud of…,” “I will work on releasing…,” and “I am deserving of…” sparked heartfelt sharing.

We’re deeply grateful to everyone who attended and helped make this event so special. Thank you to Keisha and Chrystal for grounding us with your calming practices, and our featured vendors, @culturebeadscollection and @browngirlsembracellc, for allowing us to shop with purpose and treat ourselves.

And a special thank you to SLK Health Services Corporation for being a true community leader and providing a safe, welcoming space for us to come together.
