Recap: Black Girl Self Care Day

On Saturday, Dec. 3, we held our first Black Girl Self Care Day event! As 2022 starts to come to a close, we wanted to bring women together to unwind, enjoy some healthy bites, reflect, and uplift one another. The morning started out with yoga, led by MQC co-owner, Tianna. Following yoga, we took a moment for meditation and journaling to write down how we felt in that moment and what we want to bring into 2023. Then we went into our first Melanin Queen Card activity, #9 Say What’s On The Sticky Note, led by MCQ co-owner, Andrea. This self-care activity is about writing down and reading aloud affirmations. Each woman wrote down their affirmations on sticky notes and exchanged their sticky notes with a partner. The partner held up what was written for the person to read aloud their affirmations.

We then went around and shared one word we want to work on embodying for 2023. Women shared, “confidence,” "fearlessness," “grace,” “bravery,” “patience,” and “strength.” The next activity was around Melanin Queen Card activity, #7 Put It On Paper. Each woman handwrote an uplifting and encouraging message to exchange with another woman. Then we passed out the notes for each woman to read aloud the message they received. Words have so much power and it was evident at that moment. We were so moved by what women wrote from their hearts.

This also opened up a safe space for women to openly express themselves. The event wrapped up with networking and our raffle prize drawings, where we raffled off our Unleash Your Melanin Magic card set and a journal.

We thank everyone who joined us for a wonderful morning. A special thanks to our food vendor, Jasmin Sellers of Naranti Natural Foods. We featured Naranti Natural Foods in our favorite Black businesses post. A special thanks also goes to Keisha Watson of Bright Journey Counseling for sharing information on her mental health services.
