Recap: Black Girl Poetry Meetup

Our co-owner, Tianna, said it best, “Poetry is like putting your heart on paper.” This was certainly evident at our Black Girl Meetup on April 29 to celebrate National Poetry Month.

The event kicked off with everyone doing a poem activity, I am. This poem activity was meant to be a guide to reflect on our personal experience, how we see ourselves, and how we see the world.

We then shared what we wrote. It was a moment of vulnerability to express our true essence.

I feel lucid

I touch whispers
I see angels in the clouds

I want insight to inspire
I pretend to be bold

I am beautiful

Then it was time to do our self-card activity, #45 Follow a Trail of Words. This activity is about using books or poems to find different words to reflect on.

We all went around and grabbed poetry books to do the activity. Many of us picked out Black Girl, Call Home by Jasmine Mans. Some of the things we reflected on were the importance of spending time with family, being in control of our happiness, and fostering deep connections.

And not only did we celebrate the work of notable poets, but some women recited their own poems on the unjust death of Trayvon Martin, the Black experience working blue-collar jobs in the South, and on our ancestral history and richness.

This was such a special event being able to pour into one another through poetry. We thank everyone who attended.
